Carib Cement Helps GSAT StudentsMarch 4, 2010 On Tuesday, Caribbean Cement Company Limited for the second time in a week has launched a new corporate social responsibility initiative. This time the beneficiaries are 43 students preparing for the Grade Six Assessment Test (GSAT) in less than a month. At a location which was previously unoccupied at 171 Windward Road, Carib Cement has facilitated an intense four week workshop to help these students from the community. This workshop is supported by two trained teachers, two teacher trainees and Carib Cement employees. Two hour long classes will be held twice per week for these students aged 11 to 12. At the launch of this programme on Tuesday on location, Carib Cement's Human Resource Manager, Dalmain Small said that this workshop was the preliminary phase in a more organised and long term programme offering instructional support to children in this age group. The subsequent phase will involve Grade 5 students and start at the beginning of the summer term and run until March of 2011. Small added that in this phase, parents would be involved, exposing them to parenting skills and soliciting their support. The Social Development Corporation (SDC), which has partnered with Carib Cement on many projects, will assist in this area. Last week, Carib Cement launched its Kiln 5 Community Paving project which involved the training of twenty one persons from the community to work on the project. Training was conducted by concrete expert and former senior lecturer in civil engineering, Dr. Robin Osborne. Also in attendance at the launch of the GSAT workshop dubbed the "Grade Six Excellence Initiative' were Member of Parliament for East Kingston & Port Royal, Phillip Paulwell, Carib Cement's General Manager, Anthony Haynes, Councillor for the Norman Gardens Division, Angella Brown Burke, Inspector Lawrence Stern of the Rockfort Police Station and Howard Martin, vice president of the Rockfort Development Council.
