Aggregate resources
are rocks including crushed stones, sand, gravel, marl and fill, which have been mechanically crushed to specific sizes depending on the end use. Most of the aggregate (75%) in Jamaica consists of white limestone and is used primarily in the building and construction industry. The rest of aggregate consists of volcanic rocks which are also used in the concrete, road and building construction industry.
There are over 150 active mining operations in Jamaica and Jamaican aggregate is used in road base, concrete, blockmaking, housing construction, fertilizer, animal feeds. There is also a dacitic volcanic rock that is suitable for use as a non-skid aggregate in airport runways
There are two (2) main types of aggregate: Coarse (3/8" to 2") and Fine (3/8" to dust).
Product which is available for export from Gypsum pier, Harbour Head, Kingston includes riverstone (volcanic) aggregate and limestone aggregate,.
Port Upgrade Activities
- 24 Hour rating approval for daylight and nighttime berthing was granted in April, 2006.
- Throughput of 800thp is planned for completion by end of September 2009.
- ISPS Certification was granted in August 2004 and Port Security Officer is Major George Benson.
